How
Haflingers Captured My Heart by Eva
Lis Bring, Sweden (winner of the 2001 Haflinger Friends essay
contest)
Involved in this one-minute drama was one Haflinger, six years
old, leader of his herd. And one man, born deaf and dumb some
sixty years ago. Most of his life lived in a mental hospital, but
ten years ago, he moved to a small unit-home. And with daily help
and good care he has accepted the outside world and now lives
kind of a good, ordinary life.
He had never been on a horse-back, but at his first visit here,
we invited him for a ride. He mounted the horse, very carefully,
didn't want to hurt the horse. He found the right signal for Go
and we all went
for a nice walking pace into the woods.
Second visit, this man went straight to our number one Haflinger,
grabbed his golden ears, gave the horse's head a firm shaking and
let out the only sound he is able to--a huge roar! Loosened
his grip of the ears and just stood there, smiling and waiting.
Nobody in the "audience" had a chance to interfere. We
all waited, breathless, for the catastrophe.
And what did this wonderful Haflinger do?
He caressed this old man's furrowed face very gently with his
nostrils, inhaling the mans scent, then licked his hand. If I've
ever seen a horse smile at someone, this was the time.
Together with a Haflinger, no words are needed, just be your true
self.
